This is a conversation piece. A conversation lacking words; connecting through color. The shaded figure represents pain and trauma, the figure on the right has some shaded parts too. The difference between the two figures is that one is accepting. One is allowing the trauma to be healed and is becoming open to new experiences. The other figure has internalized everything and carries lost hope. Through color there is an understanding; that one once was the other. The bold green stroke is serving as a symbol of hope and affirming that it is possible, to become whole again.

This piece represents that it is not yet my time to go. I still have unfinished business left on this earth. There are parts of me that are all filled in. There are also parts of me that have yet to experience new people new places and new feelings. The right arm and leg of this painting are one solid color. Untouched without shades of black and white. Simply just red. The red that comes in the tube of paint. Pure. That leg and arm will get filled when I have completed my time on this earth. Where I have finally felt the feelings that have been waiting for me my whole life. Complete Me is a piece to remind me there is more to live and more to feel. I am not completed yet but one day I will be. And on that day I can proudly say I am complete.

My intention for this piece was to make an obvious statement with an option to ignore it. Having a strong subject with a pose that screams help was very important to me, but to have an even louder background to act as an excuse in not seeing a cry at all, that is what brought this piece to life. The symbolism in connection with today’s society and the flags we choose to ignore because we would rather look at something else allows this piece to have meaning.

I have recently been fascinated by textures and how I can manipulate paint by using different tools and approaches during the process. Using the background as the shading for the figure allowed me to be free and explore how I can emphasize a figure without getting super detailed. After staring at this piece I named it Zaina which is a feminine name of Greek origin meaning "Beauty". I find that this piece can look like beauty in destruction, with a chaotic background and a subtle feminine figure to tie it together.

This piece holds a lot of meaning for me. I took a break from painting to see the world from another lens. I had trapped myself in my little studio forgetting there was life outside of it. Starting this piece was like starting over again. I began painting with my old styles and worked my way to my current vision. This piece holds the layers of my progression, the layers of me.
I feel that the ultimate takeaway (for me) is the realization that if we look a little closer; we are everything, and the more beauty we see in everything else the more we will see in ourselves.

I feel defeated vs I am defeated.
When you feel something, it stays in the body. When you become something, it spreads like a disease. The walls in your room start to feel like the rib cage protecting your lungs. Cracking at every breath you take. Feeling as if the room around you and the structure holding you up can break at any second.
Having the figure in this piece blend in with the background shows the relationship between self and environment; a mirror image. The monochromatic color scheme allows this piece to live.
